Gaming Keyboard or Gaming Keypad
Gaming peripherals are very common nowadays, sometimes we see them on a standard setup which is used mainly for productivity like in an office or similar establishment. Oftentimes we are attracted to a product for the cosmetic value to our application and this seems to what many people think about gaming gears. While this is also true to a certain point, it is not the only and main reason why we spend so much to update our setup because their practical functions are what matters the most.
One of the most popular upgrades we do after the PC itself is usually the mouse and keyboard. The latter is a bit expensive hence some are reluctant to move from their basic keyboard but, depending on your application, upgrading can mean better performance as well. We believe there is no such thing as the perfect peripheral since each can bring its own advantage and disadvantage. For example between keyboard and keypad, while both are used for the same purpose, different games may need different peripherals as well.
Keyboard is an all-rounder option for almost everything both serious and entertainment with tons of keys to use as inputs and as you can already guess, they are excelling when it comes to games with lots of commands and hotkeys such as strategy games and role-playing games or sometimes ideal for first-point shooter as well. On the other hand, game keypads like Razer Tartarus V2 Vs Pro are designed for the sole purpose of gaming with its unique layout and only for the right hand.
They are typically built over ZXCV keys to make them easier for users to reach without leaving the WASD area and also provide the most-used keys as it optimizes the layout for gaming only. It even gives your thumb some useful tasks to cover compared to how it is usually only used for Space and Alt. Typically Keypad is ideal for applications such as with first-person shooters and role playing games but not as great for complex RPGs.

Choosing a Gaming Keyboard
If you are here then it means your option falls into the keyboard and personally, this is also the most convenient as well as versatile solution for those whose PC is also used for productivity. There are some factors you may need to consider when buying a new gaming keyboard but two of the most important are the keys or switch and build quality. Switch is the most crucial as it gives different experience to the users and between three options available: membrane, scissor, and mechanical the latter is what we often prefer.
Mechanical switches give the best feedback according to most users and feel great on your application but also tend to be very noisy as well. The next is their build quality and this is because they are meant to handle the rigorous application. A regular keyboard may have all the keys needed for your games but they tend to not be as long lasting especially when you are playing fast-paced gaming results in frantic button pressing.
About Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite
Now when we already have an idea on which keyboard to go for or what they have to offer, it is time to see what the market has to offer. There are tons of options out there today as the hobby is getting more popular and you can find those from well-known to those we never heard of. Personally we do like products from popular names because they tend to be more reliable but, they are also often more expensive than the rest.
When talking about gaming peripherals, there are only some names that come to our mind, probably because they are also what dominate the market and among those, Razer will be one of the most, if not the most popular option for PC gaming. They are also very reliable not only because of how well-known their name is but for the product’s quality that almost everyone loves. We personally like their competitive price point and wide variant of options so all users can get the most ideal option for their application.
For those who are in the market for a reliable gaming keyboard, Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite are two amazing options to consider. These two are more affordable compared to the new Huntsman Elite which is also the favorite of many due to its useful setup and amazing mechanical switch yet, since the latter is quite expensive, many of us are opting for the cheaper models. Since choosing a keyboard is very personal, we do prefer mechanical switches as well due to its texture.
Razer Ornata Chroma is probably among the best options below $100 today as it is quite cheap compared to many similar gaming peripherals and this is affected by the kind of switch it is using. In our opinion it is also a good option for anyone who wants both games and productivity keyboard without letting go of too much budget. Blackwidow Elite on the other hand is the upgrade of its popular original model now with new face, as well as new switch.
Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite Design
Side by side, all keyboards are usually looking the same including Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite; you must be familiar as well with their setup. However, as you can already guess, the more expensive Blackwidow is using metal to build the unit and compared to full plastic of Ornata, we are sure the cheaper model will not be able to sustain heavy use as what we hope on Blackwidow or Huntsman. Their layouts are also slightly different and what we love the most from the newer keyboard is its multimedia functions at the top right.
In Ornata Chroma, the buttons or keys are also the same as the regular keyboard with the top right is used to put the LED notification for caps lock and scroll lock, as well as macro recording and game mode. Comparing them to each other, it seems that the Blackwidow Elite is slightly taller on height. Both have thick, braided cables that can last for a very long time and equally come with a wrist pad which can be attached or detached conveniently.
Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite Switch
As it has been mentioned above, the most important factor of gaming keyboards is their switch and in this part they are already very different as Ornata is using mecha-membrane while the latter uses mechanical switches. The name itself is self-explanatory and this is Razer’s technology that combines mechanical switch with membrane so there will be this cushiony feeling as you press the key while the mechanical switch will depress the dome to register stroke hence it requires less effort and has a shorter cap.
On the other hand, the Blackwidow Elite is using a green switch and this is also upgraded with a plastic coverage on both sides of the cross which is also slightly bigger than the older green switch. This upgrade makes the keys even more stable and register commands reliably even when you are pressing not exactly at the top center of the keys. On sound comparison, the mecha-membrane has similar noise to green switch but not as loud and also has shallower press compared to Blackwidow’s full mechanical switch.
Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite Features
The next part we want to mention here is their feature and this is also what makes Blackwidow Elite better in our opinion. This is about the top right of the keyboard as it offers some control function for multimedia usage including the rotating knob which is slightly protruding from the keyboard’s frame to make sure our finger can access it easily from the outer side. These buttons are also programmable through Synapse to do various tasks depending on your preferences.
Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite Cable Organizer
The last part is their organizing side but here Razer Ornata Chroma and Blackwidow Elite are equally amazing in our opinion. Our problem with the more expansive Huntsman Elite is how poor the cable management is and this is thankfully not what happens in these two. The cable itself comes from a shallow slot below the keyboard and if you drill a hole on the table, we can vanish the appearance easily. If not, there is a slot to route the cable out from the keyboard left or right.
Razer Ornata Chroma vs Blackwidow Elite
Both of them are amazing options to improve your setup but also different. First is from the build quality because Blackwidow is made from metal hence it is safer to say that the unit will last longer as well as more durable for aggressive players. Second is the switch because Ornata is using a combination of membrane and mechanical switch which is shallower but also less noisy than full mechanical green switch the latter has. Third is the additional control panel Blackwidow Elite has to offer best convenient.
You can go with any of them as they are both great options for the budget but, personally we like full mechanical switch, and Blackwidow’s new green switch feels great, even comparable to their purple switch which is why we do recommend to get this one if you don’t mind spending a little bit more.
