Computer games are fun and they are also convenient because you don’t have to own a separate set of devices just to play video games. There is only one computer and we can use them for productivity as well as entertainment. The amount of games that can be played on a computer is also getting more diverse and the best thing is probably because we can build the PC itself to be as advanced as the current tech can offer.

Yet, computers are meant to be stationary and this may not be for everyone. There are always options to consider and a laptop can be a great alternative as well. They are not as advanced or powerful as a computer but the form makes them suitable for a lot of people. Here are what you may want to consider when buying one.

Think about the GPU that you need. It is true that some games are using CPU but the majority of games are still relying on GPU and this is why it is a crucial part to consider in your laptop. Currently most of them are featured with Nvidia GeForce GTX or RTX GPUs. Depending on where you read this, the newest available options may vary but for the entry-level gaming, we can start from GTX 1650 or RX550M for most games while the mid-range can opt for RTX 2060, RTX 3060, or RTX 3070.

Next to GPU we have CPU and currently the standard is i7 even though the newest is i9 but the amount of options is still not as many as the previous line and the budget matters as well here. Since we can still get away with a more moderate CPU, Intel i5 will still be a good processor. The thing is since they are usually not upgradeable, it is necessary to make the wise choice now. The update is Intel has the 11th Gen Intel Core H35 announced at CES this year and the 45W will soon follow.

There is still RAM and storage to think about too because gaming can be heavy on the RAM and nowadays 8GB is probably sufficient for the average task but if you also play games on them, it is wise to go for a 16GB or upgrade it. As for the storage we can have an SSD and hard drive combo because the gaming specified laptops usually have a small SSD for the boot drive. The larger SSD will reduce loading time but it is quite costly too.

About MSI GL65 and Asus TUF

This is only for the core of your laptop but since this compact device combines everything, we also suggest considering the build quality, screen, the keyboard and mouse, even though it is far more comfortable to use a full-size keyboard than the one on the laptop. With the growing popularity of computer games, the options for gaming laptops also increase so it can be a bit confusing to choose one. Personally we recommend choosing popular options if you just want to shop quickly.

Most manufacturers are carrying a certain line meant for their gaming performance so some of your favorite manufacturers may have the choice. When it comes to laptops for gaming, MSI and Asus are two powerful brands to look for. They carry some of the best gaming laptops today and specs wise also vary depending on how much you want to spend or which seems to match your gaming or gaming/productivity needs the most, chances are they will have the perfect gear for you.

For those who are aiming to have a powerful setup and willing to spend a little bit more for the experience, MSI GL65 and Asus TUF are two promising options to consider. Do note that there are plenty from these lines but the two we will compare today are model GL6510SFK062 and model TUF506IV-AS76 thus not applicable for all laptops from the lines. They are comparable, powerful, and still reasonably priced for something that works amazing out of the box.

The comparison is almost like an Intel versus AMD because they are different at the core but it doesn’t make them far apart when it comes to overall performance. With relevant CPU and reliable GPU, the MSI GL65 and Asus TUF are suitable for your gaming activities and as a productivity tool as well. They are not perfect however so there are still things left desired but we do think they are equally promising options, especially performance wise.

MSI GL65 and Asus TUF Design

We can’t say much about the appearance of these gaming laptops because personal taste matters the most. Personally we have no issue but we know some people will prefer a more elegant look out of their almost 2K laptop. We do like the backlit keyboard and for MSI, the keys feel a bit rubbery which some people may love or despise. The spacious track pad is located a bit to the left and they do feel great for productivity like typing or browsing. There is also a dedicated button to increase the fan speed when needed.

Similarly, the TUF is also RGB and while it looks amazing with the light on, it is still very visible when off because of the white lettering. In comparison, the TUF has a wider gap from the laptop board to the monitor hinge but it is not an issue besides for aesthetics and probably gives a sense that the monitor is floating when gaming in a dark room. It is slightly wobbly however so while it may not affect the performance, it makes us feel less secure.

MSI GL65 and Asus TUF Performance

Now for the most important part, let’s see what MSI GL65 and Asus TUF can offer based on the core of these gaming laptops. Starting from TUF, this variant comes with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphic card and Ryzen 7 4800H CPU which is tested to be able to handle most games even at the highest settings and even ray tracing on some titles. On the other hand GL65 uses RTX 2070 and Intel i7-10750H processor which are also at the top of the performance.

If you are playing Battlefield V or Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we can ray-traced them on both laptops to optimize the GPU which will get you around 75 or 80fps at the peak, at least when played at 1080 so we do think they are carrying the same capacity to play most games and at the highest settings. Since most people will buy a laptop not only for gaming but also for their other activities, we do think productivity is pretty much at the top for MSI GL65 and Asus TUF. Both laptops are tested with browser running over a dozen tabs at once and they are still responsive. You can even watch some videos on the tabs or opening tabs in the background and playing a game at the front which is surprisingly still possible. Personally, this is one of the best reasons to buy these laptops for hybrid functionalities.

MSI GL65 and Asus TUF Battery

Because MSI GL65 and Asus TUF are laptops, we feel the need to mention about the battery life but different models may come with different batteries and the samples we have today are installed with a 51Whr and 90Whr type. As laptops they won’t last long and for games they may only be playable for a few hours yet, the TUF still manage to finish at around 8 hours 30 minutes with productivity related tasks while the GL65 only last for about 5 hours.

MSI GL65 and Asus TUF Experience

Lastly on the experience with these laptops, they are more than enough for regular gaming sessions both at work or at home. As long as you carry the charger we can rely on them for productivity and gaming but do note that they will also heat up quite fast, approximately an hour for games will make them uncomfortable so we recommend buying a cooling pad. In addition the displays are not very bright and lively compared to many similar options so it can be less satisfying for those who are used to vivid displays.

MSI GL65 vs Asus Tuf

Both MSI GL65 and Asus TUF are good options for the budget and while they are not perfect at least they are working amazingly for gaming and productivity. The core may be different but they are on par on performance and we can play almost any games without any issue. Personally we like the GL65 keyboard and mouse better, but it can be subjective since TUF also feels good but for the sturdiness we like the GL65 while for battery life TUF is more long lasting than GL65.

You can go amazing with any of these laptops based on which seems to fit you the most. In comparison we recommend the TUF if you will often travel or bring the laptop to work or school for its battery life but for a rather stationary setup, we actually like the MSI keyboard and it is built better.
