Logitech G240 vs G640

We are choosing gaming mice for their reliability but those with an optical mouse may want to use a mouse pad as well for the sensor to work properly because unlike the laser mouse, they are not as versatile. For gamers with an optical mouse, Logitech G240 Vs G640 are two promising options to consider. The surfaces are designed to provide your mouse with the proper texture to work well and be more reliable during the application. If you wonder which of them will be the better choice, let’s see the comparison below.

Gaming Mouse Pad

Computer peripherals may not directly process the information that we want but they are crucial to input the data that we will work on as well as executing the task that is possible for the machine. One of them is not working properly and the process may not be as streamlined and as effective so whether it is the mouse or keyboard, the two are playing a role in affecting the way we use the computer. In addition, you may also want to add a little bit more too, such as a mouse pad.

When asked whether a mouse pad is necessary or not, it will depend on what type of mouse you have. In the past we used this mechanical mouse with a marble-like ball or round solid part that glides over the surface of the table. It doesn’t use any form of light but a hard rubber ball which acts like a wheel to maneuver the device. As it is using the physical movement of the ball to gather information, it is useful to have a mouse pad to provide it with a better surface to glide.

In modern days we have optical mice such as Razer Basilisk V2 Vs Ultimate and laser mice such as Logitech G500s which as the name suggest are using a light source to track the mouse movement. The optical mouse is using infrared LED while the laser mouse is using a concentrated laser beam. They work in the same manner which captures and maps the reflection data. After the mouse receives the data, it is recorded by the sensor and sent to the computer for translation in the form of cursor movement.

The reason why mouse pad is more often used by optical mouse owners is because the light is low in penetration level which is why it can’t work as effectively against glossy surfaces or reflective surfaces like glass, compared to lasers which can use any type of flat surface to track. People who are using a mouse pad want to have a smooth and tactile movement for the mouse across the provided surface and it is said to even elevate the battery life as well.

Mouse pads can improve comfort and convenience too because they provide the hand with a soft and cushioned surface and if you have the larger variant, we can put it below the keyboard to dampen the vibration while typing or keeping it firmly in place. Those with a delicate table or surface may want to use a mouse pad too in order to protect the surface from the repetitive movement that may scratch the furniture.

About Logitech G240 and G640

If you are here then we assume that a mouse pad will be very useful as well. Both people who are using the computer for productivity only or for those who game as well on the device may need one depending on which seems to work best on the application. We do think this is quite subjective to whether you feel it is necessary or not outside the type of sensor the mouse uses but people who own an optical mouse may want to consider it more.

We also think the mouse pad is useful to prevent the wear of the mouse bottom and reduce the time and effort of cleaning it as overtime there are grimes and dust that may get stuck onto the rubber bottom. For gamers who are using the peripheral more extensively, it is a good idea to have a mouse pad and when it comes to game peripherals, one of our best choices is Logitech. Not only for gaming, we also often choose their regular mouse or keyboard for productivity.

Logitech currently carry some of the most impressive gaming mice in the market or everyone’s favorite G502 Lightspeed but you can find some interesting mouse pad as well to pair them with such as the Logitech G240 and G640. These mouse pads are very similar in fact they are almost identical so if what you are aiming is just to get a surface to layer the table with something to let the mouse track properly, any of the two will be working the same.

What sets the two apart is mostly on the size and this can be highly subjective to the type of playing or movement that you are using. For a mouse used in a high sensitive setting the smaller one should be enough to let the cursor travel far enough before reaching the edge of the mouse pad but if you are using low sensitivity or often use big movement across the surface, we will highly recommend getting the G640.

Logitech G240 and G640 Design

When they arrive, you can sort of already know why the G640 is more expensive because the packaging is probably twice as big as the G240 and this is because the mouse pad is also bigger. For most people, we do think the G240 should work well and this is also the type of size you will often see on most computers or even bigger than our typical office mouse pad. Out of the box the mouse pad is rolled and there is nothing else in the package.

We have this impression that the sheet is very thin and flexible. They are rolled with a paper manual at the back of the pad and it is blue in contrast to the front which is matte black, with a G logo on one of the edges. Since the mouse pad is rolled in the box, they are not instantly flat when we lay them down the table but they will flatten as you use them. The texture of the surface is soft but not slippery and it sticks to the table surface really well too.

Logitech G240 and G640 Surface

Moving further, let’s see what Logitech G240 and G640 can offer starting from the material. Just like most mouse pads, the two are fabric type which is why it is flexible and soft to fold for storing or transporting when it’s needed; you can just roll it, insert it back again in the box and we are ready to go. Both of them are using the same moderate surface friction to provide the adequate amount of friction to the low-DPI mouse.

Sometimes when your table has a distinct texture, it can be a burden to the mouse’s sensor which is why these mouse pads are providing the consistent texture to make sure it can be properly translated by the mouse. It eliminates the chance of improper tracking by the dirty table and other common desk surface texture. In addition, since these mouse pads are tested using G mice, those with the mouse may have a slightly improved reliability by pairing it with these pads.

Logitech G240 and G640 Size

While the texture and design of Logitech G240 and G640 are the same, they are not exactly identical as well. We love to see that the texture is the same across the surface so from edge-to-edge they are maintained to provide reliable performance. In dimension, the G240 is not small at all with a measurement of 11.03 by 13.39 inches and an ultra-low profile of 1 mm thick only. In comparison the G640 is 15.5 by 18.11 inches with a thickness of 3 mm.

The difference is massive and it all depends on your needs. If you are the type who uses large movements or find it necessary to move the mouse from one spot to another far from each other, having a G640 is convenient as we don’t need to lift and re-adjust the position often.

Logitech G240 and G640 Experience

Now for the experience, we do think the Logitech G240 and G640 are very similar as well. Because they have the same surface, the texture feels the same too and they will perform exactly the same. The amount of surface and the thickness however may affect how it feels like when using these mouse pads. Personally we feel like the thinner G240 is more comfy as it is lower to the table and it is standard size as well so we can place it on most table setup unlike the G460 that cost too much space for our simple table.

Logitech G240 vs G640

Technology wise the Logitech G240 and G640 are identical but with the wider surface the G640 also comes with a thicker depth. It can be very subjective but performance wise the two are identical and comfort wise the thinner G240 is more comfortable to use. It should be enough for most people unless you find using the mouse in a big movement a lot. It is also more compact but not narrow which is great for almost every table setup.

- Moderate surface friction for low-DPI gaming: Improves mouse control with just the right amount of friction for sudden starts and stops
- Consistent surface texture: Gives you greater tracking performance and aiming precision
- Matched to Logitech G sensors: The ideal surface, game-lab-tested to maximize Logitech G mouse sensor accuracy and performance
- Stable, comfortable base: Soft cloth surface improves wrist comfort. Rubber base keeps the pad in place during high-intensity gaming
- Moderate surface friction surface gives the right amount of resistance to the mouse feet when starting or stopping a rapid or sudden movement common to low DPI gaming
- Consistent surface texture provides the sensor the optimal imagery for translating mouse movement into cursor movement, an improvement over often inconsistent or dirty table or desk surfaces
- Using a surface texture closest to the optimal testing environment, G640 gives gamers access to the get the fullest Logitech G mouse sensor accuracy and precision
- Rubber surface helps keep the flexible surface in place and prevents the cloth from bunching up in front of the mouse and interfering with smooth mouse movement

Conclusion

The choice is all yours because our preference may differ but we do think if you are not going to use the mouse with big movement, the G240 is in a good size and thickness. It also has the same surface technology as the G640 and performs similarly great.
