Gaming Keypad

Video games are extremely popular and currently one of the mainstream forms of entertainment. They are more accessible today thanks to the widespread internet and smart devices. Almost everyone from all social classes can play video games on their smartphones. Whether it is offline or online, video games are fun. However, for those who play on PC, there must be a complaint about the nature of the keyboard. The peripheral was essentially for typing, so it is not surprising that many disagree with the ergonomics.

A gaming pad is designed to solve the ergonomic issue of a regular keyboard. They are ideal for people who find the keyboard no longer comfortable for prolonged use or if you love trying something new. The design of the gaming pad follows the contour of our hand. Unlike keyboards where your fingers have to spread to press different keys on each side, the gaming pad groups keys so they can be accessible for all of your fingers. The purpose is to improve comfort and, hopefully, performance.

Performance is subjective because it is more about the experience than the device. You can’t beat pro players with pro equipment, but they surely improve the experience. The gaming pad is not for everyone, just like PC gaming is not for everyone, especially if you prefer consoles and controllers. The equipment can be pretty expensive as they are still niche, and not many people use it. Additionally, using a gamepad is like learning how to game in the first place as we need to muscle memorize and configure a lot of things.

About Azeron Compact and Classic

Like trying new games, new equipment is exciting, and they may be your next permanent setup. A gaming pad is a great choice if you find the hand is moving too much for comfort and you need something that can make controlling simpler. Many companies that make gaming peripherals also carry a variant of the gamepad. Your favorite gaming brand may have at least one in its collection. Start from the names you are more familiar with and adventure into the more niche world.

If the market’s leading brands don’t have the model that attracts your attention, how about shifting to a unique alternative? One of the most exciting options for you who want to try a new gaming pad is Azeron. Some may not be familiar with this company yet because they are still relatively new. This company makes unique gaming pads because the design differs from typical models from other brands. Azeron currently has Cyborg, Compact, and Classic gaming pad variants.

All gaming pads adopt the same “robotic-claw” design instead of a set of buttons like in most gaming pads. Rather than commercial buttons, these pads have small sensitive panels that act as buttons and are accessible from the bottom, front, or back and side of your fingers. We focus on the Azeron Compact and Classic variants as both are currently the most affordable. The two are very similar with few differences, and Compact has a lower learning curve.

The learning curve is a vital point when you try new equipment. We need time to get familiar with a new console that is relatively easy to remember, and we will need more time to memorize these gaming pads. The main difference between Azeron Compact and Classic is the number of buttons since the Classic has more. We also think the Classic is easier to use because it has better ergonomics. Azeron Compact and Classic Design

Unlike mass-produced products, the Azeron Compact and Classic are still coming on a small scale. The most eye-catching besides the robotic look is the plastic itself. Most of the construction is done using 3D printers to see the pattern on its surface, especially on the fingers, base, and thumb panel. The widest part is surprisingly smooth and has a semi-glossy look. The palm rest has a curve that goes well with the contour of our hand. The overall product quality seems excellent.

The bottom has several pads that prevent the gaming pad from moving around on our table. There are plenty of screws here that adjust each hinge, and you can customize it as you want. The gaming pad is USB connected to your PC through an approximately two meters braided cable. As you may notice, the Classic has a taller profile at 5.5-inch while the Compact is 2.7-inch. The difference between Azeron Compact and Classic is that Classic has more buttons on the index and middle finger sections.

Azeron Compact and Classic Buttons

Now let’s see the number of buttons in Azeron Compact and Classic because this is the main part that separates the two. Unlike a regular gaming pad, each finger has to handle at least three buttons. The Compact has fewer buttons or 17 buttons for four fingers except for the thumb. On the other hand, Classic adds another two buttons for the index and middle finger, making it has 19 buttons for the four fingers placement. The thumb will handle a joystick, a 5-direction button, and another press button.

Besides the buttons we will be using through the gameplay, both variants also have another button below the palm rest to switch between two onboard profiles. The LED light lit up according to which profile we chose.

Azeron Compact and Classic Features

This onboard feature is accessible for personalization through the software. The software is pretty intuitive, and we can configure many things from here. Sadly, RGB is not part of their system as none of these variants have aesthetic lighting, so it may be a drawback if RGB is your thing. Azeron software is handy for mapping or assigning your keys to whatever you need them. One of the most interesting things is we can even adjust the joystick rotation.

This feature changes the analog stick rotation to follow what your thumb prefers because our hands are different, and the mobility may vary. Hence, it is a great feature to offset the joystick according to taste. The software also supports multi-key inputs of modifiers, and you can make them useful on other software/applications other than video games.

Azeron Compact and Classic Customization

Enough with the software. Another customization is hardware-based. Comfort is a vital part of gaming peripherals, and to achieve greater comfort, we have to be able to personalize the equipment. Azeron Compact and Classic support hardware adjustment through the tiny screws on each connection. For example, the fingers can be widened or put close to each other, following the size of our hands. The buttons on each finger are also adjustable, so you can make them a bit further to avoid accidental activation or closer so we can easily access them.

Azeron Compact and Classic Experience

Lastly, let’s talk about the experience with Azeron Compact and Classic. Both gaming pads are very similar in design because Classic only adds extra buttons that you can press with your index and middle fingers. The overall features and built quality is the same. Besides getting familiar with how the equipment works, the most challenging part is to assign each button to the keys you will use in gameplay. For example, whether you want to set WASD on the four fingers side or choose to use the joystick for navigation.

There is no wrong option because it is subjective, but we think this assigning and configuring part is very time-consuming. Comfort-wise we like how these gaming pads work because our wrist doesn’t move that much like when using the keyboard. But, getting familiar and letting muscle memory finally take over is not happening instantly. We find that pressing a button with nails is more complicated than pressing backward or down. The index finger has a button on its right, and we often forget that it exists.

The Azeron Classic has another set of buttons above the index and middle fingers, and these are pretty challenging because the position is not ideal for placing buttons. Your fingers have to reach further, and we don’t find it as comfortable as a regular pressing-down button.

Azeron Compact Vs Classic

The Azeron Compact and Classic are unique options if you are interested in trying a different method to navigate the game. They are not the most comfortable gaming pad, but it is subjective. Comparing the two, we find Compact to be the most ergonomic form of key placement. The Compact has slightly fewer buttons and is shorter, so our fingers don’t have to lift to press the top buttons on each panel. The Compact variant has the same feature and customization as the Classic gaming pad.

Both Azeron Compact and Classic are similar, but the latter has more buttons. We recommend the Compact variant because it is more ergonomic and easier to use. The gaming pad still has plenty of buttons, which are easier to reach.
